From the North Wilts Chronicle on Friday the 14th of February 1911

Some ten days ago a painful accident which unhappily has been attended with fatal results, befell Herbert Mills, carter and waggoner to Messrs. Adye and Hinwood, of the local bacon factory.

The man was carrying a truss of hay up the step-ladder to a loft, and when 9 feet from the ground, he tried to force the truss through the doorway, when the end of it apparently wedged, and the poor fellow was thrown backwards to the ground, sustaining serious injuries to the skull. He was conveyed, to the Cottage hospital, where death took place on Sunday morning.

An inquiry was held on Tuesday in the Y.M.C.A. room before Coroner A. L. Forrester and a jury. Mr. C. Johnston, H.M. Inspectorate of Factories, watched the proceedings, and Mr. J. D. Curtis (insurance superintendent) was present on behalf of the Yorkshire Insurance Company).

Dr. Reginald Moore stated that when he was called to see the deceased after the accident he found a fracture at the base of the skull, from which he died on Sunday morning, April 9th.

The jury returned a verdict of accidental death. Mr. Arthur Hinwood said he wished on behalf of the man’s employers to express their great sympathy with the deceased’s family.
